There was a first-ever gold medal for Ecuador in women’s wrestling at the Under-23 World Championships in Belgrade in Serbia on Friday.
20-year-old Lucia Yamileth Yepez Guzman overcame Russia’s Ekaterina Verbina by VFA, 4 – 0 in the final of the 53-kilogram category.
The two other gold medals won on day 5 of the championships went to Canada and Ukraine.
Ana Paula Godinez Gonzalez beat another Ukrainian, Kateryna Zelenykh by VPO1, 10 – 7 in the 62-kilogram class.
And Anastasiya Alpyeyeva made up for some of Zelenykh’s disappointment by beating Kendra Augustine Jocelyne Dacher of France by VPO1, 4 -1 in the 72-kilogram division.
