India on Tuesday recorded a total of 9,062 new COVID-19 infections. The active caseload stands at 1,05,058, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare informed. The country also reported 36 deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number Covid-related fatalities to 5,27,134.
The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 4,36,54,064.
The daily positivity rate was 2.49 per cent while the weekly positivity rate was recorded at 4.38 per cent, according to the health ministry.
Maharashtra on Wednesday recorded 1,800 new coronavirus cases, more than half of them from Mumbai and a steep jump from 836 a day ago, while six more patients succumbed to the infection in the state, the health department said.
With these new additions, the overall COVID-19 numbers rose to 80,76,165, while casualties increased to 1,48,180, said the department in a bulletin.
Ladakh recorded 18 new Covid cases that pushed the numbers to 29,085, officials said on Wednesday.
All the new cases were recorded in Leh, they said.
So far, 228 people have succumbed to COVID-19 in Ladakh. Of these, 168 deaths were reported from Leh and 60 from Kargil, according to officials.
The number of active cases stands at 75 in Ladakh – 69 from Leh and six in Kargil, they said.
Mizoram’s COVID-19 tally rose to 2,35,529 today as 222 more people tested positive for the infection, 144 more than the previous day, a health official said. The death count remained unchanged at 717 as no fresh fatality was reported, he said. The state now has 774 active cases, the official added.
Arunachal Pradesh’s COVID-19 tally rose to 66,447 today after 43 more people tested positive for the infection, a senior health official said. The northeastern state had reported only two cases yesterday. The death count remained unchanged at 296 as no fresh fatality was reported, State Surveillance Officer (SSO) Dr Lobsang Jampa said. The state now has 145 active cases.
The COVID-19 tally of Andaman and Nicobar Islands rose to 10,520 on Wednesday as three more people tested positive for the infection, a health bulletin said. The Union territory now has 16 active cases. A total of 129 patients have died due to the infection to date.
Delhi reported 917 new coronavirus cases and three deaths in the last 24 hours.
Meanwhile, Hospitalisations in Delhi are up by over 60 per cent since August 1 as the city reports a surge in coronavirus cases with a positivity rate of 19.20 per cent, highest in over 200 days, data show. At least 90 per cent of those admitted have not taken booster shots, according to the Delhi government.
A majority of the admissions took place on Tuesday when the national capital reported 900 cases.
Although cases reported yesterday were lesser in comparison to preceding days – the city reported 1,506 cases on August 2 and 2,495 on August 9, the number of hospitalisations were at 61 per cent of the total cases reported for the day.
Of the 917 cases reported yesterday, 563 people were admitted to city hospitals, and 202 were moved to intensive care unit, or ICU, due to virus-related issues, the data released by the Delhi government show. Three people also died due to the virus, it said.
In comparison, only 20 per cent of the people who were infected with coronavirus were admitted on August 9 when the city reported 2,495 cases and seven virus-related deaths.
Similarly, the percentage of hospitalisations on August 2 stood at 20 per cent of the 1,506 cases reported on the day. However, 105 people of the 341 admitted to hospitals were critical and moved to the intensive care unit, or ICU.
