Daniil Medvedev took over the No. 1 ranking in men’s tennis after storming into the semi-finals of the Mexico Open on Thursday with victory over Yoshihito Nishioka (6-2, 6-3).
Enduring a difficult day following homeland Russia’s launch of an invasion of Ukraine, the 26 year old displaced Novak Djokovic for top spot in the ATP after the Serbian lost at the Dubai Championships earlier in the day.
And despite Medvedev not having all of it his own way against the plucky Nishioka, he still finished the job to become the 27th man to climb to the top of the men’s world rankings.
