Suved Parkar had a memorable first-class debut as the Mumbai batter hit a double hundred in the Ranji Trophy quarter-final against Uttarakhand in Alur in Bengaluru on Tuesday, June 7. Suved became only the 2nd Mumbai batter after the state team’s head coach Amol Mazumdar to do so in his Ranji Trophy debut.
Suved Parkar, who was also coached by Rohit Sharma’s childhood coach Dinesh Lad, went past 200 runs on Day 2 of the quarter-final of RanjI Trophy as Mumbai went past the 600-run mark, taking control of the match against Uttarakhand.
Suved Parkar, who batted at No. 4, stitched a 277-run stand with Sarfaraz Khan, who hit a quickfire 153 as the Mumbai batters ground down the Uttarakhand bowlers in Bengaluru.
Parkar, meanwhile, is the only second batter to hit a double hundred on debut in a knockout match of the first-class competition in India. Amol Mazumdar was the only one until Monday to do so, having scored 260 for Bombay against Haryana in the 1993-94 season in Faridabad.
Parkar also became only the 12th Indian batter to hit a double hundred on first-class debut. Notably, Saqibul Gani of Bihar holds the record for being the only Indian batter to score a triple hundred on first-class debut when he hit 341 against Mizoram in Kolkata earlier this year.
Notably, Parkar got an opportunity to make his debut for Mumbai after he was drafted in the squad for the knockout stages following an injury to Ajinkya Rahane during IPL 2022.
Earlier in the day, Sarfaraz Khan became the first batter in the history of the sport to covert each of his first 7 hundred in first-class cricket to 150-plus scores. The young Mumbai batter, who had represented Delhi Capitals in IPL 2022, took his tally past 700 for this season after hitting his 4th hundred. Notably, he had scored in excess of 900 runs for Mumbai in the previous Ranji Trophy season.
About Ranji Trophy
The Ranji Trophy is a domestic first-class cricket championship played in India between multiple teams representing regional and state cricket associations. The competition currently consists of 38 teams, with all 28 states in India and four of the eight union territories having at least one representation. The competition is named after the first Indian cricketer who played international cricket, Ranjitsinhji, who was also known as ‘Ranji’.
The competition was launched following a meeting in July 1934, with the first fixtures taking place in 1934–35. The trophy was donated by Bhupinder Singh, the Maharaja of Patiala. The first match of the competition was held on 4 November 1934 between Madras and Mysore at the Chepauk ground in Madras. Mumbai (Bombay) have won the tournament the most times with 41 wins including 15 back-to-back wins from 1958–59 to 1972–73.
The 2020–21 Ranji Trophy tournament was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the first time since the tournament’s inception in the 1934–35 season that the Ranji Trophy was not held, instead, the BCCI has decided to organize 50 overs Vijay Hazare Trophy.
