World Boxing C’ships 2021: Debutant Akash Kumar enters semis

Akash Kumar (54kg) has secured at least a bronze medal at the ongoing Men’s Boxing world championships in Belgrade, Serbia on Tuesday.

The 21-year-old Akash prevailed 5-0 with a fabulous performance which was a perfect mix of powerful punching and great showmanship. Akash stunned Rio Olympic silver medallist Yoel Finol of Venezuela. He was the only Indian left in fray after four others bowed out with quarterfinal losses.

With this win, Akash became the 7th Indian male boxer to win a medal at World Championships.

However, Narender Berwal (+92kg), five-time Asian medallist Shiva Thapa (63.5kg), Nishant Dev (71kg) and Asian champion Sanjeet (92kg) bowed out of the competition, leaving Akash as the lone Indian in fray now.
