Coronavirus: India Reports 20,551 New Covid Cases

India recorded 20,551 new cases of the novel coronavirus in the past 24 hours. According to the data shared by the Union Health Ministry on Friday (August 5), the total recovery rate reached at around 98.50 per cent and total recoveries data reached to 4,34,24,029.

The total active cases of COVID-19 in India have decreased to 1,35,364, the health ministry data showed today. Yesterday, the registered active cases were 1,36,478.

A decrease of 1,114 cases has been recorded in the active COVID-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours. The active cases comprise 0.31 per cent of the total infections, the ministry said.

The total death toll in the country is now at 5,26,600. In India, the first death due to the COVID pandemic was reported in March 2020.

The daily positivity rate on August 5 was recorded 5.14 per cent.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 87,71,60,646 samples have been tested up to August 4 for COVID-19. Of these 4,00,110 samples were tested on Thursday.

Gujarat in 24 hours ending 5 pm on Friday added 947 new positive cases, taking the total to 12.59 lakh. The state’s death toll increased to 10,975 with a death each in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar cities and Morbi district.

Himachal Pradesh recorded 780 new Covid-19 cases and two fatalities due to the disease on Friday, pushing the state’s infection tally to 3,03,750 and the death toll to 4,153, officials said.

Mumbai on Friday reported 446 Covid-19 cases, the third consecutive day when the addition to the tally was more than 400, which took the metropolis’ infection count to 11,26,596, a civic official said. The toll increased by two during the period to touch 19,656, he added. The city had added 410 cases to its tally and the toll had risen by two a day earlier, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation official pointed out.

Expressing concerns over the recent surge in Covid-19 cases in the capital, health experts cited multiple reasons behind the rising trend in daily infections in Delhi. The city breached the 2,000 cases mark on Thursday after nearly 180 days while the capital reported 2,202 new COVID cases yesterday. Meanwhile, India recorded 20,551 new Covid cases in the last 24 hours.

Puducherry posted 83 fresh Covid-19 cases on Friday, marking a steep fall in the number of new infections, The union territory on Thursday reported 178 new cases.

Odisha’s Covid-19 tally rose to 13,17,309 on Friday as 836 more people, including 169 children, tested positive for the infection, while one fresh fatality pushed the toll to 9,145, a health bulletin said.

For the fourth consecutive day on Thursday, 887 more people tested positive for the infection, with the highest (201) in Gautam Buddha Nagar.Two deaths, one each from Kannauj and Ayodhya, were also reported.Amit Mohan Prasad, additional chief secretary (medical health) said, ‘The state tested 74,384 Covid samples in the past 24 hours. Till now, 11,98,97,963 samples have been tested.’
